What is a visual memory test?
A test of how much visual information you can hold at once. A grid of squares flashes a
pattern for two seconds, the pattern disappears, and you click the squares you saw. Each
level adds one more tile, so your score is the point where your memory runs out.
What is a good visual memory score?
Most people reach level 8 to 12. Level 13 to 15 is above average, and past level 18 is
exceptional. Levels 1 to 7 usually mean you are still warming up, and scores climb
noticeably over the first few attempts.
How does the scoring work?
Your score is the last level you completed. Level 1 shows 3 tiles and every level after
adds one, so level 10 asks you to hold 12 tiles at once. You get three lives for the
whole run. A wrong click costs a life but the level carries on, so a hard level can cost
two lives and you still advance.
What does this test actually measure?
Visual working memory: the short-term store that holds what you have just seen while you
act on it. That store is small and it fades in seconds, which is why the test gets hard
so quickly. It is the same capacity you lean on when you glance at a room and remember
where things were.
How can I improve my visual memory score?
Stop trying to remember individual squares. Look for shapes instead, so a scattered group
becomes one L or one diagonal line, and you hold two or three chunks rather than twelve
tiles. Take in the whole grid at once rather than scanning it, and don’t rush your first
click, since recall is untimed.
Is this the same test as the one on Human Benchmark?
It follows the same well-known format: a grid, a flashed pattern, one extra tile per
level, and three lives. Our version fixes the pattern display at two seconds, caps the
grid at 7 by 7 so tiles stay big enough to tap on a phone, and saves your best level,
average, trend graph, and milestones in your browser.
Does visual memory decline with age?
Visual working memory does tend to peak in early adulthood and decline slowly after that,
though the range within any age group is far wider than the gap between age groups.
Sleep, attention, and practice with the format itself all move your score more than a
birthday does.
How is my data stored?
Your browser stores everything (best level, run history, trend, milestones, and settings)
locally using localStorage. Nothing reaches any server, so your results stay private on
your device and won’t sync across browsers.
